Here’s a look back at 6 of many of the necklaces, rings, and headdresses that didn’t just complement the theme, but stole the show.
The Met Gala is known for couture that stuns, themes that spark debate, and entrances that shut down Fifth Avenue. But when you look closer past the capes and corsets, you’ll find the real showstoppers: jewellery. From lavender sapphires worth millions to diamond earrings that spiral like plumage, Met Gala jewels have turned heads, set trends, and sometimes outshone the ensemble entirely. Here’s a look back at 6 of many of the necklaces, rings, and headdresses that didn’t just complement the theme, but stole the show.
1. Uma Thurman in Vintage Cartier (2016): At the 2016 fête, she pinned a historic Cartier diamond peacock brooch to the shoulder strap of her ivory Ralph Lauren gown, marking its first appearance on the red carpet. Crafted by the renowned jewellery house as a custom piece in 1948, this brooch from the Cartier Collection in Paris measures nearly 8 inches in height and features over 90 carats of diamonds.
2. Iman in Diamond Tiara & Chandelier Earrings (1997): The model-actress captured all the attention in A white and bronze embellished Versace gown, teamed with a diamond floral tiara and matching cascading chandelier earrings. The jewellery, often credited to Fred Leighton, displayed a masterclass in elegant, regal styling that has remained iconic for decades.
3. Priyanka Chopra in Magnus Emerald Necklace (2025): The theme of high jewellery would not be complete without mentioning Priyanka, who stunned in an appearance wearing the Bulgari “Magnus Emerald” necklace. The masterpiece featured a stunning 241.06-carat faceted emerald surrounded by diamonds, complementing a vintage-inspired polka-dot outfit.
4. Diljit Dosanjh in Custom Patiala Necklace & Tiger Bracelet (2025): Making his Met Gala debut in 2025, Diljit Dosanjh paid homage to Punjabi heritage with a contemporary recreation of the legendary 1928 Patiala Necklace. Designed by Golecha Jewels, the necklace incorporated roughly 50 carats of tourmalines and 130 total carats of stones, mimicking the grandeur of Maharaja Bhupinder Singh. He complemented this with a Cartier Nature Sauvage Tigre bracelet, a bold emerald-eyed tiger design in 18k yellow gold, mimicking a true king.
5. Colman Domingo in Boucheron (2025): As a cochair of the Met Gala, actor Colman Domingo, known for his love of jewellery, went all out with the accessories for his custom Valentino cape. The standout was the French maison’s Iceberg necklace, suspended with large rock crystal and diamond drops, paired with Serpent Bohème Solarité asymmetrical diamond stud earrings, one curving up and around the back of his ear, spreading like plumage. A selection of gem-set rings and bands completed the look.
6. Jennifer Lopez in Harry Winston Jewellery (2019): For the 2019 Met Gala, Lopez wore a deep-plunging silver beaded fringe Versace gown alongside more than $8.8 million in diamond jewellery from Harry Winston. Staying on theme, Lopez paired the dress with a glittering silver headdress and Harry Winston’s “Purple Dragon Necklace.” She coordinated her eye makeup with the necklace’s central lavender-purple cushion-cut sapphire, which was framed by 64.16 carats of round brilliant, pear-shaped, and marquise-shaped white diamonds. To heighten the extravagant effect, J.Lo added 1972 vintage 29.59-carat diamond chandelier earrings, two Secret Cluster diamond bracelets, and two platinum-set diamond rings from the famed jewellery house.
