Why Is Katrua So Expensive? Katrua is often referred to as the “vegetarian’s non-vegetarian” because it is believed to be rich in protein. Its limited seasonal availability and growing popularity contribute to its high price every year. Despite the premium cost, demand remains strong among those who look forward to eating it during the monsoon.

According to forest experts, deer living in the Kishanpur Wildlife Sanctuary within the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve are particularly fond of Katrua. During the monsoon, they are often seen digging it out from the ground and eating it. The vegetable grows naturally in the soil, mainly around the roots of trees.

Katrua is considered a nutrient-rich plant containing vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. According to experts, consuming it provides instant energy that may help reduce weakness and fatigue. Some also believe it may support blood sugar regulation, making it beneficial for people with diabetes. Its nutrients are also thought to contribute to heart health.

As Katrua grows underground, it is usually covered with mud and soil when harvested. It should be washed thoroughly before cooking. According to local beliefs and expert opinions cited in the report, Katrua is considered beneficial for heart health and may also help reduce physical weakness and tiredness.

Katrua grows naturally in the Terai forests, mainly near the roots of sal and teak trees. Local collectors dig it out from the forest floor during the monsoon season. The report also claims that although its extraction is prohibited, Katrua continues to be collected from forests and sold openly in local markets.

Katrua contains a variety of vitamins, minerals and nutrients that are believed to help energise the body. Regular and balanced consumption is thought to reduce fatigue and physical weakness while supporting immunity. Its unique taste and perceived health benefits are among the reasons why many people eagerly wait for the monsoon harvest every year.
