In the grand tradition of Paris Haute Couture Week, where fantasy and craftsmanship collide, Manish Malhotra made his long-awaited debut with a collection that was personal and culturally triumphant. The designer presented his first haute couture collection, ‘Maa’, a heartfelt tribute to motherhood that fused love, beauty, and the rich legacy of Indian craftsmanship.
In a historic debut at Paris Haute Couture Week 2026, Manish Malhotra presented his first haute couture collection. The show marked a significant milestone as the celebrated Indian designer brought his signature opulence and deep-rooted Indian craftsmanship to the global stage of French couture.
Rooted in the universal emotion of a mother’s embrace, ‘Maa’ felt like both a personal story and a cultural celebration. The designer shared on Instagram, “The colours of my childhood in the 70s were the colours of my mother’s saris.” When he began venturing into the creative world a decade later, her quiet reassurance became his foundation, “When I chose an unconventional path in the 80s, my mother never asked me to be certain. She simply believed in me. Sometimes, love is the greatest permission to dream.”
Malhotra’s vision came alive through sculptural silhouettes, fluid drapes, and breathtaking embellishments. Intricate zardozi, delicate hand embroidery, and fine threadwork adorned luxurious fabrics, creating garments that were at once protective and liberating. Rich jewel tones mingled with soft pastels and shimmering metallics, evoking the many dimensions of maternal love — from subtle warmth to radiant strength.
Malhotra recalls, “In the 90s, as my world grew, I realised everything I set out to achieve carried a part of her with it. Success may have found me later, but her faith was where everything truly began.”
Complementing the visual feast was a moving soundtrack that blended Indian classical elements with contemporary orchestral pieces, heightening the emotional resonance of the show. The atmosphere was meditative yet celebratory, allowing the audience to fully immerse in the collection’s narrative.
The show was staged with quiet drama- soft, golden lighting with a blood red runway; models moved with graceful confidence, each look telling its own chapter of belonging and heritage. The collection honoured traditional Indian forms while embracing the sculptural freedom of couture, resulting in pieces that felt both timeless and contemporary.
In the front row, global fashion powerhouse Anna Wintour sat alongside Isha Ambani, their presence underscoring the collection’s significance on the international stage and highlighting the growing global appetite for Indian couture excellence.
With ‘Maa’, Manish Malhotra has not only made a confident entry into the rarefied world of Paris haute couture but has also created a collection that feels profoundly alive. Every stitch and silhouette carries the weight of legacy, emotion, and exceptional craftsmanship.
