Mint spoiling too quickly this summer? Try this simple freezer trick to keep mint leaves fresh for weeks or even months without losing their flavour or colour.
Mint leaves are in high demand during summer, which is why many people buy and store them in bulk. However, mint tends to spoil faster than coriander, especially in hot weather, making it difficult to keep fresh for long.

This simple storage method can help preserve mint for an extended period while reducing the hassle of repeatedly buying, cleaning and preparing fresh mint. Here’s how you can store it properly.

Start by buying a fresh bunch of mint and washing it thoroughly three to four times with water. Then blend the mint leaves with a little water in a mixer. The consistency should be smooth, neither too thin nor too thick.

You can strain the mixture if preferred or use it directly. Add a small amount of lemon juice to help maintain the mint’s green colour for longer. Pour the mint paste into an ice tray and place it in the freezer.

Once the mint cubes are fully frozen, usually after 6 to 8 hours, transfer them into an airtight container or a ziplock bag suitable for freezer storage. Keep them in the freezer compartment for long-term use.

Take out only the number of cubes you need and reseal the bag immediately. This helps prevent freezer odours from affecting the mint. Stored this way, mint can remain usable for up to three months. It can be added to buttermilk, lemonade, chutneys and more.

Use the mint cubes immediately after taking them out of the freezer. Do not allow them to melt completely, as this may cause the mint to darken. Add them directly to drinks or chutneys and always handle them with clean hands.
