Nepal has always shared a close bond with India, so much so that Indians do not need a visa to enter, live, work, or travel in the country. This was due to the 1950 Indo-Nepal Treaty of Peace and Friendship. So, it caused a lot of ripples when certain fringe news organisations and social media accounts began to share posts on how Nepal was tightening security measures for Indian tourists.
According to some news orgs, it was reported that the newly appointed government of Nepal has announced revised travel regulations for Indian tourists, making valid identity documents mandatory for entry and limiting tourist stays to a maximum of 30 days. It was further stated that these new measures were aimed at improving border management and strengthening tourist monitoring across the country. The decision was expected to affect frequent travellers, pilgrims, and tourists visiting Nepal from different parts of India.
However, the official account for the Nepal Tourism Board took to X (formerly Twitter) to squash the rumor and douse any fire of distress among Indian tourists who might’ve wanted to visit Nepal.

In an official statement released titled, NTB Urges Request to Avoid Unverified Reports on Indian Tourist Restrictions, they stated, “Nepal Tourism Board has expressed serious concern about the misleading and factually incorrect information being circulated by different media outlets and online platforms regarding travel regulations for Indian visitors to Nepal.”
They added, “Reports claiming that the Government of Nepal has imposed new restrictions requiring mandatory identity cards for Indians crossing the Nepal-India border, capped Indian tourist stays at 30 days, or authorized confiscation of vehicles for overstays are entirely false, baseless, and misleading.”
The Government of Nepal explained that they have no introduced any “new policy restricting the duration of stay for Indian tourists, nor has any change been made to the longstanding open-border arrangements and bilateral understandings between Nepal and India”. Going on to talk about the “historic people-to-people relations, cultural ties, and tourism cooperation” that exists between the two countries, because past cross-border relations, they continue to remain strong and unchanged.
In the official statement, the Tourism Board shared, “In fact, the Government of Nepal has recently introduced a new online facilitation system aimed at making travel more convenient for Indian tourists and other international visitors entering Nepal via land routes with private vehicles. Under this newly launched digital system developed by the Department of Customs under the Ministry of Finance, foreign vehicles entering Nepal can now complete temporary entry permits and revenue payments entirely online. This initiative has been introduced solely to simplify procedures, reduce inconvenience at border points, and enhance the overall visitor experience.”
Asking media organisations to avoid spreading any kind of unverfied news, Nepal Tourism Board wrote, that it “strongly urges media organizations, digital platforms, tourism stake-holders, and the general public to refrain from spreading unverified information and to rely only on official government sources for accurate updates regarding tourism policies and travel regulations”.
Reassuring potential tourists that “Nepal remains a safe, welcoming, and friendly destination for visitors from India and around the world” the Government of Nepal shared that they are “fully committed to promoting smooth cross- border travel, sustainable tourism, and high-quality visitor experiences while preserving the spirit of friendship and cooperation between Nepal and India.”
