GoodWorks Group’s CEO says a salary of Rs 1 lakh per month provides a comfortable life in many tier-2 cities, though lifestyle expectations can significantly change the equation.
Breaking down city-wise estimates, the Bengaluru-based entrepreneur said people living in Indore may need around Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 2 lakh a month to enjoy what he described as a premium lifestyle.
As India’s metros continue to grapple with rising living costs, long commutes and packed neighbourhoods, a Bengaluru-based entrepreneur’s take on what it means to be “rich” in tier-2 cities has struck a chord online.
Vishwas Mudagal, CEO and founder of GoodWorks Group, shared a video explaining how much monthly income people may need to be considered ‘rich’ in India’s tier-2 cities.
In the viral clip, Mudagal said a salary of Rs 1 lakh per month provides a comfortable life in many tier-2 cities, though lifestyle expectations can significantly change the equation.
“How much do you really need to be called rich in India’s smaller cities? In tier 2 cities, one lakh per month actually goes a long way. But if you want lifestyle freedom, not just survival, here’s what it takes,” he said.
Breaking down city-wise estimates, the entrepreneur said people living in Indore may need around Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 2 lakh a month to enjoy what he described as a premium lifestyle.
“Indore, 1.5 to 2 lakh. High-end flat in Vijaynagar, great schools, car plus leisure life,” he said.
Moving to Lucknow, Mr Mudagal said an income between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 2 lakh per month can support a comfortable upper-middle-class lifestyle that blends tradition with modern amenities.
“Lucknow, 1-2 lakh. Nawab culture meets new malls, private club memberships plus staff,” he said.
For Coimbatore, he estimated that Rs 1.25 lakh to Rs 1.75 lakh a month is enough for independent living with financial comfort.
“Coimbatore, 1.25 to 1.75 lakh. Independent home, dining out, travel and healthcare covered,” he said.
He gave a similar income range for Nagpur and pointed to the city’s relatively affordable living costs.
“Nagpur, 1.25 to 1.75 lakh. Smart city upgrade plus low cost of living is equal to more comfort per rupee,” he said.
Discussing Jaipur, the entrepreneur said people may require Rs 1.75 lakh to Rs 2.25 lakh per month for what he termed a high-end urban lifestyle.
“Jaipur, 1.75 to 2.25 lakh. High-end lifestyle with modern cafes, golf clubs and space to breathe,” he said.
For Bhubaneswar, Mudagal said even Rs 1.25 lakh to Rs 1.5 lakh monthly income can place someone in the upper-class bracket.
“Bhubaneswar, 1.25 to 1.5 lakh. Clean, developing fast, 1.5 lakh per month is equal to upper class here,” he said.
He also described Mysuru as a peaceful and culturally rich city where Rs 2 lakh a month can provide a luxurious lifestyle.
“Mysuru, 1.5 to 2 lakh. Serene city, royal vibe, 2 lakh per month is equal to Maran Maharaja,” he said.
Mudagal also said wealth in smaller cities is increasingly being defined by quality of life rather than income alone.
“Being rich in tier 2 is not about the money alone. It’s about peace, access and freedom. You can live big without burning out,” he said.
He added, “Stop chasing rich in someone else’s city. Know what rich means for you and where it buys the best life.”
The video has sparked debate online, with many social media users agreeing that tier-2 cities now offer a better balance between earnings, lifestyle and peace of mind compared to crowded metropolitan centres like Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru.
