Mel C reveals clash with Victoria Beckham almost ended her Spice Girls career

Mel C has revealed that a heated argument with Victoria Beckham nearly cost her a place in the Spice Girls before the group rose to global fame.

Speaking on The Louis Theroux Podcast, the singer, whose real name is Melanie Chisholm, recalled the incident took place during the 1996 BRIT Awards, months before the release of the group’s breakthrough single, Wannabe.

The band had enjoyed what Mel C described as an unforgettable evening, complete with champagne and a chance to share a table with musician Lenny Kravitz. However, the night ended on a sour note.

“As we were leaving to find our car, whatever the situation was, I just turned around and said, ‘Victoria, f*** off,’” she recalled.

The following morning, Mel C said she realised the seriousness of what had happened.

According to the singer, Mel B and Geri Halliwell told her they were “disgusted” by her behaviour, while the group’s manager warned her that another incident like it could end her time in the band.

“I was told in no uncertain terms that if anything ever happened like that again, I would be gone,” she said. “That completely freaked me out.”

Mel C admitted she feared she had jeopardised the childhood dream she had worked so hard to achieve.

“I thought I might have messed it all up,” she said, explaining that the possibility of losing her place in the group over what she viewed as a trivial disagreement was terrifying.

The Spice Girls went on to go global as a pop band after releasing Wannabe later that year and selling millions of records.
