Nicolas Cage says he and his family are doing fine after a sinkhole opened outside his Malibu home.
The actor, 62, shared the update during the November 4 premiere of Madden as he got candid about his home not being available for Halloween trick-or-treaters this year.
“It was not that we’re destitute,” he said. “We’re fine. We’re continuing. We’re okay.” His wife, Riko Shibata, and their 4-year-old daughter, August Francesca Coppola Cage, are also managing.
His update follows a joke he made on October 31 at an LA Comic Con panel. The National Treasure star said he was “a little bit homeless” and was living in hotels because of what happened to his house.
It was reported on September 8 that the pit opened in part of the driveway and the road near the home. Photos showed a gaping hole beside the garage and a collapsed area of driveway. Other images showed the collapse extending to the beach below.
The City of Malibu declared a local emergency that day. It said the sinkhole was about 25 to 30 feet deep and 30 by 60 feet wide.
It also said the pit posed “imminent danger” to nearby homes and residents. Seven homes were red-tagged for hazardous conditions. Another 24 were red-tagged because they lost safe vehicle access. Gas service was cut off, and water service could be stopped.
The sinkhole formed during a weekend of coastal flooding in Southern California caused by Hurricane Marie. The storm brought unusually high tides that sent waves onto streets in Long Beach, Seal Beach and Dana Point.
