’Spider-Man’ star Elizabeth Banks recalls a sexist remark about directing men as a female director
Spider-Man actress is opening up about how she was once told that she would not be able to handle directing men on sets because they would never listen to her.
In a recent appearance on the Kelly Clarkson Show for the promotion of her new drama film The Miniature Wife, the 52-year-old actress and filmmaker recalled how she “nailed it” as a director after being told she could not do it.
The discussion sparked after Kelly asked Elizabeth if she was ever made to “feel small” in her career as in her new show, Elizabeth is playing the role of a wife who shrunk to six inches tall.
Elizabeth responded, “I was literally told because I direct films that, ‘You can’t direct men. They won’t follow you.'”
She continued, “And then I directed Ray Liotta, who played Henry Hill in Goodfellas, and I think I nailed it. Check. It’s all good.”
Among the list of films that Elizabeth directed are Cocaine Bear, Charlie’s Angel, Pitch Perfect 2 and many more.
She also articulated her thoughts on the importance of having female “storytellers” in the industry.
”I stand on the shoulders of so many women who came before me. There are a lot of actress-directors actually out there. I mean, Barbra Streisand comes to mind. She made some bangers,” the director shared.
”So, despite me knowing I’m in a great club, it’s a really small club, and it needs more representation,” she concluded.
