Princess Leonor starts university, classmate says ‘you never see campus like this’
Princess Leonor was seen smiling as she arrived for her first day at university on Monday, September 7, after three years of military training.
The 20-year-old future Queen of Spain joined thousands of fellow students at the Carlos III University of Madrid’s Getafe campus, where she has begun a four-year degree in Political Science.
Leonor, the eldest daughter of King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, arrived shortly before 9am.
While she appeared slightly nervous about her first day, the Crown Princess looked relaxed as she made her way onto campus with a smile.
One student, 22-year-old Hugo Pérez, told HOLA that the attention surrounding Leonor’s arrival was impossible to ignore.
“You never see the campus like this, waiting for a student to arrive,” he said.
Despite the excitement, Hugo added that he hoped to see Leonor simply as “another student”.
He admitted that her position as the future Queen of Spain makes that difficult to overlook.
“The fact that she’s from the Royal Household is a bit of a nuisance; she’s not just another student, she’s the Princess of Asturias,” he explained.
