Babies and blowouts go hand in hand, especially during their newborn stage. For new parents, who are still learning to care for babies, convenience is at the fore. That is where baby wipes and wet wipes come in handy, especially when one is travelling or in public places.

However, using baby wipes on your baby’s delicate skin, regularly can affect their skin microbes. We speak to Dr Saravanan R, Consultant – Neonatology and Pediatrics, Rainbow Children’s Hospital, Bannerghatta, who shares how always using wet wipes on newborns isn’t good.

The practice of using baby wipes during every nappy change might lead to skin microbiome disruption because people do not handle the process with proper care. The skin microbiome consists of beneficial microorganisms which occur naturally on the skin to provide protection while maintaining skin barrier function and preventing irritation and infection. The diaper area of babies remains moist at all times, which leads to constant friction and contact with urine and stool.

The process of frequent area wiping maintains cleanliness while also removing essential oils, helpful microbes, and waste materials. The skin develops dryness and sensitivity because repeated exposure to this condition occurs, which leads to an elevated chance of developing redness and diaper rash. The area around the buttocks and the nappy area needs special handling because its natural state requires protection from any form of disturbance.

The type of baby wipe used plays an important role. Wipes which have fragrances together with alcohol and potent cleansing components will cause skin irritation to babies with sensitive skin while disrupting their normal skin functions. Opt for soft fragrance-free pH-balanced wipes, which are safer for daily application because they do not interfere with the skin’s natural defence mechanisms.

The method which people apply wipes has an important effect. The skin barrier suffers damage through excessive rubbing and scrubbing, which leads to increased skin irritation. The method of gentle wiping together with short air-drying before applying a new diaper helps decrease moisture while promoting optimal skin health.

The caregivers should monitor the baby’s skin conditions through direct observation. The diaper area skin microbiome protection and comfortable, healthy skin maintenance benefits from using plain water to cleanse the skin between different wipe products.
