The Met Gala, one of the most prestigious red carpet events in the world, is hosted annually at the iconic Metropolitan Museum of Art. Each year, the institute curates a unique theme that highlights fashion as a powerful expression of identity. This year, the highly anticipated event, scheduled for May 5, will celebrate the cultural phenomenon of Black Dandyism under the theme: “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.”
The MET Gala 2025’s theme signifies a cultural movement that reclaims power through fashion. Inspired by guest curator, professor and head of Africana Studies at Barnard College, Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, the theme highlights resistance and pride through powerful, personal menswear.
According to The MET, the exhibition will explore the evolution of black menswear from 18th-century Europe and its contemporary influence on the world. The display will highlight the significance of black hues, which have been celebrated for their sartorial importance throughout history. It will showcase a variety of fashion inspirations that boldly represent fearless self-expression, including meticulously tailored suits and avant-garde outfits with corporate touches.
But What Is Black Dandyism?
Black dandyism is a cultural movement that originated from the Atlantic slave trade and the period of emancipation. During this time, Black men began to challenge societal norms and assert their individuality, dignity, and style by expressing their unique fashion sense. The otherwise stereotyped Black men used fashion as a tool to reclaim power with their change in attire and mannerism. The reimagining of fashion proved to be a form of resistance and self-expression against European styles.
All tied to a rich and complex history, and expertly curated by Andrew Bolton alongside Monica L. Miller, this time, the exhibition will unfold through twelve defining traits of the Black dandy, like Champion, Respectability, Heritage, Beauty, and Cosmopolitanism, all inspired by a 1934 essay by Zora Neale Hurston.
Taking inspiration from the Black men’s legacy of pride, the MET Gala 2025 invites individuals to showcase their personal style with confidence. Moreover, the exhibit will take viewers on a virtual journey from slavery to supreme style. It would include visuals from 19th-century Maryland to the evolution of Black Dandies and their sense of fashion. This theme is indeed more than just looks.
